SYNOPSIS

As a clever girl in stodgy, mercantile Baltimore, Betsy Patterson dreams of a marriage that will transport her to cultured Europe. When she falls in love with and marries Jerome Bonaparte, she believes her dream has come true—until Jerome’s older brother Napoleon becomes an implacable enemy.

Based on a true story, The Ambitious Madame Bonaparte is a historical novel that portrays this woman’s tumultuous life. Elizabeth Patterson Bonaparte, known to history as Betsy Bonaparte, scandalized Washington with her daring French fashions; visited Niagara Falls when it was an unsettled wilderness; survived a shipwreck and run-ins with British and French warships; dined with presidents and danced with dukes; and lived through the 1814 Battle of Baltimore. Yet through it all, Betsy never lost sight of her primary goal—to win recognition of her marriage.

Dear Ms Chatlien, I came across your name and it piqued my interest. You see my favorite high school teacher was Mrs. Chatlien who taught sophomore English literature. She always wore dresses or long skirts . She wore glasses and had red hair. By the end of the school year she confided in her class that she had alopecia and that she wore a wig and had to pencil in her eyebrows. She chose me as her student helper to correct papers and help her record grades. I was very shy and this privilege made me have more confidence in myself. I will always remember her with gratitude and great affection. Do you know if she was related to you? Very sincerely, Robin Langley

    • Dear Robin,

Yes, I do know Mrs. Emilie Chatlien. She’s my mother-in-law. I’m so glad to hear that she had such a positive influence on your life. You may be surprised to know that she is still alive; in fact, she celebrated her 94th birthday last Monday.

I will tell her that I heard from you when I see her at Easter.

      Ruth
